New Chief Commissioner to lead ASQA

The Turnbull Government has confirmed two key appointments to Australia’s national regulator of vocational education and training.

Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills Karen Andrews MP announced Mark Paterson AO has been appointed the new Chief Commissioner of the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) from January 1, 2017.

“Mr Paterson’s contribution as an ASQA Commissioner and his extensive experience across government and industry will be a great asset in strengthening ASQA’s role in monitoring and assuring the quality of Australia’s VET sector,” Minister Andrews said.

“His appointment comes at a time of important reform for the sector.”

Minister Andrews also announced ASQA Commissioner, Professor Michael Lavarch will be reappointed for another year when his current term expires on 15 April 2017.

“Professor Lavarch has brought a strong background in regulation, stakeholder management, and a thorough understanding of Commonwealth and state legal frameworks to his role,’ Minister Andrews said.

ASQA plays a vital role in monitoring the quality of training and assessment in Australia’s VET system, so that graduates have the knowledge and skills they need and which industry and employers expect.

“I look forward to working with Mr Paterson and Professor Lavarch, and congratulate them on their appointments,” Minister Andrews said.
