Welcome to the November edition of the ASQA Update.

In this issue, we reflect on the achievements of the past year with the publication of ASQA’s Annual Report 2020–21. The report is a record of our activities and performance in the previous financial year, and shows that, in what was a foundational transition year of reform for ASQA, which saw us work through a whole-of-agency reform program and continue to respond to the pandemic, we maintained our regulatory focus and worked in partnership with the sector to support quality VET and facilitate the sector’s role in meeting Australia’s skills needs and supporting economic recovery.



This month, we also published our Regulatory Risk Priorities for 2021–­­22, which outline our strategic and operational focus for the year ahead and provide a basis for best practice regulation that responds to current and emerging risks to quality outcomes in the VET sector. We will review and publish our regulatory risk priorities quarterly to support our ongoing commitment to transparency and for providers to better understand and respond to risk.



One of our risk priorities for 2021-22 is the delivery of VET to international students (including offshore). We recognise that competition between providers for onshore international enrolments has grown during this period of ongoing international border closures. We are identifying and promoting quality practices and monitoring risks, particularly in the areas of marketing and recruitment, provider arrangements with education agents, and support provided to students to progress and meet mandatory work requirements. 



In this ever-changing environment, we are committed to ensuring that the quality of VET remains at a high standard and that our regulation continues to support confidence in the integrity of national qualifications. Our strategic review into online learning  is examining the evolving needs across online learning capability and compliance. In the most recent of our insights papers, we take a look at the research into the different ways in which student cohorts learn online, and will further explore this theme over the coming year.



We look forward to continuing to progress this important work, together with our partners across the sector, to achieve our purpose and vision for a quality VET sector.
